CROATIAN APOXYOMENOS (2-1 century BC)

The old bronze statue of an athlete, 192 cm long, the seabed between the island and many Orjule Lošinj island on 27 April 1999, is the only large bronze found so far on the east coast the Adriatic Sea. Of the eight known variants of the prototype Apoxyomenos (the most famous is the bronze statue of the Kunsthistorisches Museum in Vienna in 1896, discovered at Ephesus), the statue Lošinj is the most perfect and best preserved. The statue’s sculptor is unknown, but the classic beauty and quality of finish of a craftsman consumed witnesses.

Restoration work at the museum where Lošinj Apoxyomenos from 2010 is displayed to the public, is being implemented.
